Happy 39th Birthday Aaliyah!

By: Kristen Sales

On this day, January 16, 2018, Aaliyah Dana Haughton would have been thirty- nine years old. She’s an
artist that I had an infinity for when I was younger. Her style of music was something I enjoyed, and I
always thought that she was so pretty. She left a name for herself, that continued on past her unfortunate

Aaliyah is often dubbed the “Princess of R&B”. I can’t say I disagree with that sentiment. She did
introduce a noticeable change for how female singers expressed their craft. Her achievements didn’t stop

at simply impacting the genre. Her song, “Try Again” made her one of the first artists to make it to the top
Billboard 100 on just airplay alone. She even got a Grammy

2018 Red Carpet Looks for NAACP Image Awards

By: Dominique Fields

WOW! The NAACP Image Awards aired last night, and everyone looked spectacular! My neck is still sore from the whiplash it received. Okay, maybe that’s a little dramatic, but you get my point. Honestly you all, I was SHOOK! Let’s have a recap over some of the looks served last night at the awards:

Yasssss Omari!! Come through with the suit and representing #BeardGang!poweromariandnaturi

Mrs. Letoya Luckett-Walker came prepared to snatch wigs! That dress beautifully compliments her melanin. Stand up melanated queen!!

Issa Rae bursting through with the full coverage in Marc Jacobs…well almost full coverage. The back of the dress have an open window for a view of that bronzed skin. I see no insecurity here!!

KEEERRRRRIIIII! Mama is causing a scandal in this dress! Washington looked STUNNING in this dress! No wonder she have the leader of the free world chasing her….on TV that is. Looking Good Keri!

Okay, this right here might be one of my favorite looks of the night. Logan Browning came to SLAY and she’s not giving any mercy. This soft and delicate pink looks AMAZING against her skin. Chill Logan, please,  you are snatching my edges and I need them.

Yes ma’am. That is all I have to say. YES. MA’AM!

Niecy Nash looked INCREDIBLE!!! So beautiful and a straight ten across the board. I honestly don’t know if a highlight contributed to her glow or she just giving the carpet some natural lighting. Either way, she gave no mercy.

Lil Mama stepped onto the carpet reminiscent of Maleficent almost. I love the color of that dress. She gave “pure heart” with this look.

Simple but elegant. You can never go wrong with simple. All that melanin is SERVIN’!!

Simone Biles reveals a BIG Secret

Simone Arianne Biles is a girl that the world was first introduced to in her international debut in March of 2013 in the AT& T American Cup. Though she finished in second, her sheer athleticism was noticeable. That was second only to the exuberant personality behind her routines. It was only a few months later that She was able to take the all around at City of Jeleso Trophy in Italy. After a few years of ups and downs, Simone was able to become a house hold name in 2016 when she went to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Simone was able to qualify for the all- around, vault, balance beam and floor exercises. She was the only gymnast that was representing the US that made it into all four categories.

In her time in the 2016 Olympics, she won four gold medals and one bronze. She won her first gold medal in the team event. Her other gold medals were won in All- Around, Vault and Floor Exercises, while winning a bronze medal in the Balance Beam event. Her first time in the Olympics was extremely successful. This success wasn’t just seen in her time during the Olympics. It must be noted that throughout her gymnastics career, she won twenty- three gold, eight silver and two bronze medals. This level of success is often why some people compare her to the gymnasts in the “Fierce Five”, like Gabby Douglas and McKayla Maroney.

A lot of these young gymnasts have become known due to their success and personalities. With Simone, her bright smile became something that she was also known for. The unfortunate connection between these girls is that they were molested by their doctor, Larry Nassar. Allegations against this man were first brought up in September of 2016 by two former gymnasts that were treated by him. With the rise of women in the entertainment industry coming out against their sexual abusers and the use of the “MeToo” hashtag, McKayla Maroney came out against Nassar. In a Twitter post on Monday (January 15, 2018), Simone Biles also came out against Nassar, stating that she too was abused by the man. She posted a picture of a letter she wrote, captioning the tweet as “Feeling… #MeToo”. The note stated that she struggled with wondering if she was at fault or if this was something that she had done to cause this, a tragic mantra often made by other survivors of sexual abuse. In her letter, Simone states that “After hearing the brave stories of my friends and other survivors, I know that this horrific experience does not define me”. She also makes note of the fact that she will push forward to compete in the Tokyo 2020.

Simone didn’t go into specific detail in the tweet, but she did refer to Nassar’s abuse as “special treatment”, something that many of the other victims also claimed. Simone also states that the USAG (USA Gymnastics) hold some form of responsibility in the sexual abuse, most likely alluding to the fact that they gave the man access to the girls. Knowing that this has happened to Simone, and 140 other girls, is truly heart breaking. But also seeing that Simone was able to bravely make the abuse known while also planning to continue to progress in gymnastics has given some sense of positivity. With unfortunate situations like this, one of the few moments of solace is the fact that Nassar will more than likely face punishment, hopefully, extensively so.

Oprah wins Big at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards!

By: Kristen Sales

The 75th annual Golden Globes was rife with political and cultural tension. From the many celebrities that
adorned the red carpet in black; a visual form of solidarity with the victims of sexual abuse within
Hollywood, to Seth Meyers man jabs at President Trump’s continuous attacks against the press, this year
was chock full of statements. But one figure was showcased to a grand degree; Oprah Winfrey. Seth first
brings up Oprah when he calls back to a time in 2011 in which he poked fun at Donald Trump, alluding to
the rumors that that was what had convinced the millionaire to run. He follows up by saying, “So if that’s
true, Oprah, you will never be president!” garnering laughs from the audience. Throughout the award
show, it is noted that Oprah would be winning the Cecil B. DeMille award. Several times prior to her
acceptance award, there are several nods to Oprah as her peers speak about her with the camera panning
to show Oprah with a smile. Just before she is give the award, we are shown clips of her on the Oprah
Winfrey Show as well as her acting chops in movies like The Color Purple and A Wrinkle In Time, set to
be released in March of this year. Amy Poehler is then tasked with the speech to introduce Oprah. They
share a hug and before Oprah can even deliver her speech, she is met with a standing ovation.

It is then that we are treated to a speech that most certainly indicated a change. She starts by detailing the
first time she saw a black man that was ever met with positive reverence. She stated that after Sydney
Portiere’s Oscar win at the 36 th annual Academy awards, she felt a sense of purpose and power. Oprah
states that Sydney had won the Cecil B. DeMille award in 1982.

She followed by stating, “It is not lost on
me that at this moment, there are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given
the same award.” She eloquently continues her speech, highlighting the many strides for change that
black women have initiated. She calls for the women who have been impacted by the MeToo movement
to also speak their truth, an acknowledgement of the sexual abuse that happened in Hollywood. Her
speech showcased her ability to both command and move a room. Every celebrity that was shown during
her speech had their eyes locked on Oprah, several were emotional during it.

Oprah closes her speech by
saying:“I’ve interviewed and portrayed people who’ve withstood some of the ugliest things life can throw at you.
But the one quality all of them seem to share is an ability to maintain hope for a brighter morning, even
during our darkest nights. So, I want all the girls watching here now to know that a new day is on the
horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of
whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men are fighting hard to make sure
that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘me too’ again.”

Again, the room is filled with applause and cheers as the occupants of the room all stand, moved by her
elegant speech. Given the reactions on various social media, it’s safe to say that many people who weren’t
of celebrity status were also moved by Oprah. Her speech left many feeling as if change is truly on the
horizon for the marginalized and disenfranchised. Oprah has yet again show cased her abilities with this
heartfelt and abundantly elegant speech. It’s almost assured that there were young minds that were
inspired by Oprah Winfrey, just as many have been over the years.
