The 75th annual Golden Globes was rife with political and cultural tension. From the many celebrities that
adorned the red carpet in black; a visual form of solidarity with the victims of sexual abuse within
Hollywood, to Seth Meyers man jabs at President Trump’s continuous attacks against the press, this year
was chock full of statements. But one figure was showcased to a grand degree; Oprah Winfrey. Seth first
brings up Oprah when he calls back to a time in 2011 in which he poked fun at Donald Trump, alluding to
the rumors that that was what had convinced the millionaire to run. He follows up by saying, “So if that’s
true, Oprah, you will never be president!” garnering laughs from the audience. Throughout the award
show, it is noted that Oprah would be winning the Cecil B. DeMille award. Several times prior to her
acceptance award, there are several nods to Oprah as her peers speak about her with the camera panning
to show Oprah with a smile. Just before she is give the award, we are shown clips of her on the Oprah
Winfrey Show as well as her acting chops in movies like The Color Purple and A Wrinkle In Time, set to
be released in March of this year. Amy Poehler is then tasked with the speech to introduce Oprah. They
share a hug and before Oprah can even deliver her speech, she is met with a standing ovation.

It is then that we are treated to a speech that most certainly indicated a change. She starts by detailing the
first time she saw a black man that was ever met with positive reverence. She stated that after Sydney
Portiere’s Oscar win at the 36 th annual Academy awards, she felt a sense of purpose and power. Oprah
states that Sydney had won the Cecil B. DeMille award in 1982.

She followed by stating, “It is not lost on
me that at this moment, there are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given
the same award.” She eloquently continues her speech, highlighting the many strides for change that
black women have initiated. She calls for the women who have been impacted by the MeToo movement
to also speak their truth, an acknowledgement of the sexual abuse that happened in Hollywood. Her
speech showcased her ability to both command and move a room. Every celebrity that was shown during
her speech had their eyes locked on Oprah, several were emotional during it.

Oprah closes her speech by
saying:“I’ve interviewed and portrayed people who’ve withstood some of the ugliest things life can throw at you.
But the one quality all of them seem to share is an ability to maintain hope for a brighter morning, even
during our darkest nights. So, I want all the girls watching here now to know that a new day is on the
horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of
whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men are fighting hard to make sure
that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘me too’ again.”

Again, the room is filled with applause and cheers as the occupants of the room all stand, moved by her
elegant speech. Given the reactions on various social media, it’s safe to say that many people who weren’t
of celebrity status were also moved by Oprah. Her speech left many feeling as if change is truly on the
horizon for the marginalized and disenfranchised. Oprah has yet again show cased her abilities with this
heartfelt and abundantly elegant speech. It’s almost assured that there were young minds that were
inspired by Oprah Winfrey, just as many have been over the years.
