GOSPEL CORNER

Hearts and prayers go up for Donnie McClurkin and his family during this difficult chapter of losing his mother Frances McClurkin. 🙁 This hits Stylista KT’s heart heavy because she was just speaking with Donnie McClurkin and learned about his loss when he posted the video.

Pastor Donnie McClurkin opened up about the passing of his mother Frances and shared details of her homegoing service. “I just wanted to thank you all for the love that you all have shown me and my family,” he said. She was 79 years old.

After suffering a massive coronary heart attack Sunday, January 13 in Bethpage, NY, McClurkin and his family were aware of his mother’s “sickly” and fragile health condition.

“We knew God was going to take her and He did,” said McClurkin. “She passed away Friday night and expired while I was at the Stellar Awards.”

When he received the news, the pastor and recording artist told Twitter followers he was “broken-hearted beyond belief.”

It was the support, love, and strength of friends that pulled him through.

Erica and Tina Campbell, Kirk Franklin, CeCe Winans, and Marvin Winans are all thanked by McClurkin for helping him emotionally cope during an incredibly difficult moment. He also gave special thanks to Anita Baker and Dionne Warwick for reaching out.

“I was able to sing on Saturday at the Stellar Awards with a heavy heart but a lifted spirit and I thank God, because my mother taught me everything I know about music,” he shared. “She gave me the gift of music and she introduced me to Jesus Christ. She was a great preacher and that was a way of celebrating her on Saturday.”

According to McClurkin, he will show appreciation for the gift of music Frances McClurkin gave him by ensuring her homegoing service is “full of music.”

The matriarch of the family leaves behind seven children: Marlene, Donnie, Cheryl, Andrea, Tony, Tanya, Rafael, and a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Preceding Frances in her journey are children Olivia and Thomas.

The homegoing services will take place Friday, January 25 at 7pm at the Greater Allen Cathedral of New York at 11031 Merrick Boulevard Jamaica, NY 11433. Rev. Floyd Flake, Sr. is pastor.

Our prayers go out to Pastor Donnie McClurkin and the entire McClurkin family in this time of loss.

Watch his special video here where he speaks about his mother.

2012 Bonnerfide Anniversary Party/ Stellar Awards weekend

WHO IS SAMSON?

He is an up and coming Christian artist hailing from Antioch, TN bringing a new style to the Christian rap scene with his own signature sound he calls “Solar Muzik.”

Samson is a man on a mission with the main objective of serving as a humble worker of God and expressing his love for Christ.

Samson shares his feelings on the state of music saying, “Music is filled with people who are trying to be everything other than themselves, and that’s because it’s driven by the want for money. I want to offer people something different, and something from God according to His will for my life.”

Check out his Solar Muzik and words of truth and knowledge in his lyrics. He seeks to save that which is lost while rhyming about Jesus and the kingdom of God. In a dying world, Samson is a warrior for the cause of speaking life through his gift of music, and by breaking the boundaries of today’s creativity by going completely out of this world.

His musical influences include: God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, Moses, the prophet Elijah, Martin Luther King, Benny Hinn, Myles Munroe, Marcus Garvey, Travion, Jonathan Phillips, Rob Vick, Oil, B Vick, J-Pure, Tupac, Nas, and Scarface.

Talking with the Gospel Greats

During the show, the gospel greats, entertainers, radio hosts and more granted me the opportunity to to get their thoughts on the Stellars, talk music, see what’s new and upcoming in their lives and more. Check it out here:

Pastor Shirley Caesar and The Caravans talk about the Stellar Awards and their longevity

Pastor Caesar says, “We started off at the Stellar Awards years ago. I remember we were the first and I’m just glad to be here 24 years later. It’s a blessing to be here! ”

The Caravans said, “In order to sustain a career this long you have to be kept by God’s grace.
We can witness what God will do. God has kept all of us the Caravans. We are one of the oldest Gospel groups out there. We give thanks to God for allowing us to be here to celebrate the 25th Annual Stellar Awards. Of course we been here since the beginning, but we’re just glad to be a part of it. ”

“I’m just so happy to be here for the 25th anniversary Stellar Awards because you know I been nominated for the Grammies 9 times and they never gave me one you understand, and you never see me on TV because they do it before the awards show starts, but with the Stellars you can be seen on TV! I have received 2 Stellar Awards God is truly good. ”

Karema Kibble speaks on her solo career and upcoming moves

Kibble says, “ I was a presenter tonight. God has opened up so many doors for me I feel blessed to start my solo career. God has been so good to me , because I had to pay zero dollars to make my songs. I know that I am fulfilling my purpose, in what God wants me to do. I started my own label I’m first on the label, but the next group of course will be Virtue. It’s whatever God wants us to do.”

David and Tamala Mann talk about their marriage, acting and the Stellars

Tamala Mann says, “We have been married 25 years and it’s great. Really it’s something I prayed for a husband that we could do things together and be together. Us being in the same field helps. First and foremost we are best friends and we enjoy each other’s company( Both chime in) .”

David Mann says, “When you enjoy each other’s company you never get tired.”

Tamela talks about her transition from music to acting in saying, “It was harder to get into the acting because music is my first love. After a while, I mean I kind of grabbed hold to it. Really that’s David’s field.”

David chimes in, “I’m loving it.”

Tamala says, “He’s coaching me and we get to be in each other’s worlds.”

David and Tamala said, “The Stellars is really the first place we started and great to be on the stage. It was wonderful union and it just shows the chemistry is still there. It’ s like a Reunion.”

Mississippi Mass Choir talk about winning the Thomas A. Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award

“To be recognized by your peers means so much and then this an Award for Outstanding Service in the community and we are about service. The Bible tells us those that want to be a chief must first be a servant. “ So from that perspective we are extremely proud. We have received awards since 1988, but to get an award for community service means more to us.”

Mother Mosie Burks of Mississippi Mass Choir talks about working solo

“I got a lot of rest but I’m not tired yet serving God “Goodness.” It feels wonderful doing my own album. It feels wonderful working on my own album , it works me a lot but I don’t complain. I go home and rest a lot and get back up and do it again.”

Micah Stampley speaks about giving back

“My wife and I started an non-profit organization called “Humanitarian Works” entitled Operation I Believe, so we’re in the beginning stages of this work and we initially started when Hurricane Katrina hit. We went to people’s homes and gave them gas cards. We are shifting wit something we call the “Take Over” geared toward urban communities. We’re looking into giving clothing, building rehabilitation centers, and homeless shelters, so that’s what’s going on with me right now. I’m really excited about Operation I Believe. Me and my wife contributed to Haiti. I also worked on a song that Kirk Franklin did with everyone that’s here. We have been in the studio working on it and recording video for this, “We are the World” type song. We were up till 3 or 4am finishing it up. We have all contributed in different kind of ways. “

3 time Stellar nominee Niyoki speaks on her career

Niyoki says, “I’m honored and humbled and it’s a very surreal moment for me. Clark Sisters, Shirley Caesar, J. Moss, Israel, The Canton Spirituals I pull from a lot of backgrounds and I think it helps me incorporate the verse and styles I had. I learned a lot from performing with Prince and I learned a lot of skills in the studio and producing with him. “

( She was a trendsetter so of course me being Stylista KT, I had to ask her about her stylist and what she was wearing.)

“This outfit is Ralph Lauren and the boots are Loubitin. Mix and Match. I’m a big fashion girl so I’m all over the place. “

Bobby Jones speaks on Stellars and having an Award named after him, fashion

Jones says, “To have an award in my name it’s the epitome of having a relationship with an Awards show. I’m extremely pleased and happy Mr. Jackson rewarded me this opportunity. Edwin Hawkins was the recipient of the award. I love everybody here I raised them all, so I can’t divide my children. The show was programmed, service was absolutely amazing tonight! If I had an award show it would have a different angle it would have to be People’s Choice, or something like Young’s People Choice or Senior Citizen Choice. ”

J.Moss

Moss says, “Just James in store it’s a 40 minute backstage pass into the life of James and all that has passed in my life.”

Karen Clark Sheard talks about her new album coming out

Sheard shares, “My name album comes out April 10, 2010. It’s entitled “All in One” and the single is “Prayed Up.” My producers are J. Moss and my son J. Drew Sheard II. I’m really excited and I feel like I’m walking into my dream. I have to give it up for my husband because he’s a business man. There are many artists who have sent me emails and letters to ask how I get to where I am. I say I’m walking in my dream.”

Dorinda Clark-Cole talks radio

Dorinda Clark-Cole said “I’m now syndicated in 27 cities with my show, Serving Up Souland we are really excited about that because we been doing it for about a year now. If you wanna listen tune in to servingupsoulradio.com.”

Donald Lawrence talks about his album

Lawrence says, “ The Law of Confessions Part 1 was inspired my Pastor Bill Winston. My pastor he teaches me in the church. This album was based on his book, “The Law of Confessions. This is really the soundtrack to his book.”

“I’m also doing House with The Sound 2010, I will be back as host and we added 3 more markets Charlotte, Cleveland, and Jacksonville. I’m definitely going to do a tour to support my album. It will probably be in the summer.”

Byron Cage

Cage said, “I’m just excited the 25th year of the Stellars and to honor hard working artists. We do it because we love God. I’m just honored and thankful for all you do in getting the word out about us gospel artists and being blessed. ”

Mary Mary

My favorite gospel duo Mary-Mary talks to me about their feelings on winning the Stellar Award for “Song of the Year?”

Mary Mary told me, “It’s amazing to win for something like “Song of the Year” you know because you’re in the studio and putting all this time and energy and effort into doing something that you will be respected by people you look up too. I can remember the first time we came to the Stellars we weren’t artists at all and we were just sitting back hoping to one day be on the stage. So now to be on the stage and win awards and get acknowledged with some of the biggest people in gospel it’s a total honor, for a song of ours to win.”

THE 11TH ANNUAL BMI TRAILBLAZER AWARDS

The 11th Annual BMI Trailblazer Of Gospel Luncheon took place on Jan. 15, 2010 at Rocketown USA in the heart of downtown Nashville. This was a special invite only event to honor and recognize gospel pioneer Andraé Crouch and Pastor Donnie McClurkin for their prestigious hard work in gospel music.

It was hosted by Yolanda Adams and Byron Cage. ( This event was on the same scale as a Clive Davis pre-party.) The performances were very moving and heartfelt. There was a sense of chills in the room as gospel greats united to pay tribute to these influential men of gospel music. READ MORE HERE
